School Curriculums Underemphasize Public Speaking Education
Rated “weak”
The Thomas B. Fordham Institute’s 2020 expert review rated Florida’s B.E.S.T. ELA standards weak, recommending significant and immediate revision. Formal oral presentations are required, but standards for developing listening and discussion skills are absent entirely — making Florida’s public speaking education lacking and one of the weakest in the nation.

NACE’s Job Outlook 2026 found that 98.7% of employers rate communication as very or extremely important, but only 55.4% find recent graduates proficient in it — one of the largest gaps of any competency measured.
